MANASQUAN NJ USA -- HIT/HIPAA UPDATE NEWS SERVICE™ -- NOVEMBER 29, 2006: HIPAA-covered entities such as providers completing electronic transactions, healthcare clearinghouses and large health plans must use only the NPI to identify covered healthcare providers in standard transactions by May 23, 2007. Most organizations have already received their NPI, but that is just the first step. Organizations also need to begin testing their NPI with payers and other trading partners, updating their referral lists, as well as modifying and testing computer systems. CMS' tag line is "Getting an NPI is free....not having one is costly." Without proper implementation and testing, having one can also be costly.
