UNINSURED CONGRESS TO FEATURE COMMUNITY-BASED INITIATIVES
The Uninsured Congress seeks to identify voluntary, charitable initiatives that are happening across the country to address the issue at the local level and to share case studies.
Such a case study is the Bedlam Alliance for Community Health in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Bedlam Alliance is an innovative, collaborative program that has provided affordable healthcare to the indigent and underserved in Tulsa County since 2003. The interactive clinics are medical homes to nearly 14,000 at-risk school children, residents of public housing, isolated elderly, single parents and working poor each year. The clinics not only provided primary care, but also specialty clinics for diabetes, dermatology, GYN women's health, mental behavioral health, hepatitis C and hypertension. Bedlam has also created pharmacy program with 5 local pharmacies filling prescriptions for $5.00 for a 30 day supply and through which the clinic is able to monitor patient's compliance better. The University of Oklahoma, Tulsa, took a leadership role in establishing the Bedlam Alliance. Currently Bedlam has over 25 partners that all play a major role in the operation of the project.
