CAMBRIDGE, MA -- HEALTHCARE UPDATE NEWS SERVICE (TM) -- JUNE 23, 2004: The Quality Colloquium, August 22 - 25, 2004, www.QualityColloquium.com, on the campus of Harvard University announced a special session on Learning from Toyota: How the Lessons of W. Edwards Deming can be Applied to Healthcare presented by Gary S. Kaplan, MD, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Virginia Mason Medical Center, Seattle, WA on Wednesday, August 25, 2004.
IMPROVING HEALTHCARE QUALITY: LEARNING FROM TOYOTA:
In 2003 and 2004 executives from Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle made three trips to visit Toyota's manufacturing floor in Japan to learn the techniques of what's called "lean manufacturing," with the goal of applying them to healthcare. According to mathematician and consultant W. Edwards Deming, as much of 40 percent of a company's expenses result from waste -- systems and processes that are poorly designed. Waste and the quality of health care are linked, says Gary S. Kaplan, MD, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Virginia Mason Medical Center. Waste is directly related to low patient and employee satisfaction, poor customer service and errors in medical treatment. Dr. Kaplan will share his experiences at Toyota on Wednesday, August 25, 2005 at the Quality Colloquium on the campus of Harvard University.
