Identified through a detailed competency analysis, the certification exam will test your knowledge in areas such as utilization, clinical documentation integrity, federal and state regulations, coding and billing standards, medical necessity compliance, denials and appeals, length of stay criteria, status determination, and other areas.
The exam is designed to measure the enhanced knowledge of the Advanced Physician Advisor. Testing not only the basics, but practical application of concepts and skills used in everyday practice. The Advanced Physician Advisor board certification will enhance the credibility of the physician advisor practicing today in health systems, hospitals, and ancillary facilities.
 Candidates who successfully complete the board certification exam will earn the credential of Certified Advanced Physician Advisor (CPHYADV). The exam is available to licensed physicians in the United States, with a current Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) license.

To prepare for the CPHYADV board certification exam, we have developed the Advanced Physician Advisor Core Body of Knowledge online course. The course is self-paced and designed to provide an educational foundation for physician advisors and interprofessional health care team members involved in utilization management, care coordination, quality improvement, patient safety, and regulatory compliance and advances the mission to improve the quality of health care.
This comprehensive curriculum is focused on the core competencies of the physician advisor role and is recommended in preparation for the Advanced Physician Advisor and Health Care Quality and Management Board Certification Exams. The six domains covered include:
- Medicare Compliance and Regulatory Obligations
- Utilization Review
- Care Management/Coordination
- Quality Measures and Metrics
- Clinical Documentation Integrity
- Leadership, Ethics, and Regulatory Guidance
The Advanced Physician Advisor course is also beneficial for nurses, physician associates, and social workers; especially those working in utilization, quality improvement, case management, transitions of care, and QI committees or programs.
ACCREDITATION & CREDIT
In support of improving patient care, the American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Physicians (ABQAURP) is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
This activity was planned by and for the healthcare team, and learners will receive 11 Interprofessional Continuing Education (IPCE) credit for learning and change.
 Physicians
ABQAURP designates this enduring material for a maximum of 11 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

This activity is designated for 11 nursing contact hours.
 Physician Associates
ABQAURP has been authorized by the American Academy of Physician Associates (AAPA) to award AAPA Category 1 CME credit for activities planned in accordance with AAPA CME Criteria. This activity is designated for 11 AAPA Category 1 CME credits. Approval is valid until January 31, 2028. PAs should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation.
